The James Family

For Descendants of Robert James of Coshquin, Ireland

I have exciting news. Thanks to a hint from William James' Obit that Pam posted. In it it states that William had a double cousin Edward living in North Dakota.

Which meant that Edward's mother was Sarah Montgomery's sister and his father was George James' brother.

Pam later mentioned that Sarah had a sister named Catherine. Low and behold after spending 3 or 4 hours on ancestry.com I found them, a whole new branch of Jameses.

I found Catherine who was married to Robert James who would have been George's brother.

I may have also found another brother.

These would add hundreds and hundreds of new relatives to the James line.

I also found someone who is researching Robert and Catherine James on ancestry.com. I have sent them an e-mail.

My head is spinning right now, so I will get back with more information later.

There is Jane James that was on one of census for Geo and Sarah. The census is dated Aug 23, 1870. Jane is said to be 3 months old on that census. She does not appear on the 1880 census for Geo and Sarah. So I assumed she died but maybe that is Robt and Catherine's daughter. Did not ck dates on the jpg you downloaded?? Just my thoughts here. No just cked and the new Jane was 4 in the 1860 census. So the brothers George and Robert both had daughters named Jane. Going to look for Montpelier now. I have to get my brain wrapped around this. We need to give all the Roberts and Georges nicknames so I can keep them straight. Like instead of old George the patriarch in US maybe Irish George. LOL Would have loved to hear his voice because you know he had an Irish brogue
Hi Pam,

The census is from 1860 so it would be another Jane.
Ok so I have thought about this. Robt, the Irish Geo's brother named after his dad, was about 7 yrs older and Catherine was about 5 yrs older than her sister Sarah. So it is likely that Robt came to US first and Geo followed or maybe they came together. Ships' logs, Mike. Let me know if you need me to go to the local LDS library. Bill and I have been wanting to do that.
That sounds right Pam. Just to let you know I just received an e-mail from someone who is researching Catherine and Robert James. More cousins!
Bill and I have always been curious about the other James' buried in the Astor Cemetery. He called me this afternoon and we know now that Robert and Catherine's son, Robert, his wife Alice and their children Clyde and Mildred Isabella (not sure if that or Isabel) are buried there. Cemetery Robert was born in 1857 which corresponds to Mike's census of the Robt and Catherine James family. At that census Cemetery Robt was 3 years old. My dad doesn't really remember them. He would have been around 12 when Cemetery Robt died and the son Clyde died in 1961. Maybe they lived elsewhere and wanted to be buried in Astor?? But why unless Robt and Catherine came to live in Astor for a while when the kids were younger??? Vital statisitics office here we come.
Hi everybody, I hope I'm posting this in the correct place. Today is my first day here, so I'm still learning my way around.
Here is some information that might interest all of you. As some of you know, David James is my great grandfather, son of Robert and Catherine James, and brother to Jane, Robert, and Edward. I have some probate records from the Muscatine Circuit Court dated 1871. From what I gather Robert James died when his and Catherine's children were still minors. Catherine then remarried a man by the name of George Ullian or Ulian. Together they had a son named Henry. Sometime before 1871, Catherine died and all the children (still minors) were left with George Ullian. The land belonged to Robert and Catherine James, which went to Catherine and the children after his death. The records that I have are records of George Ullian gaining permission to sell the land because after Catherines death the land belonged to Catherine's children. I have the map of the property in question, and also a legal description of the property if anyone is interested.
I'm trying to find out when Robert and Catherine died, where they might be buried, and a lot of other info. Let me know if this helps anyone. I think I posted earlier that David was my great great grandfather....I made a mistake, he is my great grandfather. Sorry!
Tammy
Great information Tammy. It will very interesting to put this family tree together.

Hi Tammy

David James is my great grandfather (hoping that it is the same one). I am interested in getting some information on this line as I am heading to Ireland next March again. I would love to see what you have. I screen shot this information from my Ancestry page.
